FDIKOM UIN Jakarta Brings Together Theory and Practice in Digital Media Summit

FDIKOM, UIN Online News — The Faculty of Da'wa and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta successfully hosted a public lecture titled “Media Business in the Digital Era: Business Strategy and Phenomenological Reality,” on Monday (14/10/2025).

The collaborative session between the Journalism and Islamic Broadcasting Communication (KPI) programs attracted 150 participants of faculty members and students from various FDIKOM departments.

Two prominent speakers were featured: Prof. Dr. Engkus Kuswarno, M.Si., a professor of Communication Science at Universitas Padjadjaran, and Riel Tasmaya, CEO of Indozone Media Indonesia.

The lecture was officially opened by FDIKOM Dean Prof. Dr. Gun Gun Heryanto, M.Si. who reminded the importance for students to grasp the dynamics of media business in digital era.

“Communication and journalism students today need to understand not only theory but also how the media industry operates amid digital disruption. Judging from numerous companies' assessment, they demand graduates who are critical, creative, and adaptive,” he conveyed.

The lecture brought together two essential perspectives: digital media business strategy and the phenomenological experiences of its practitioners. Prof. Engkus Kuswarno encouraged participants to view the media world through a phenomenological lens. Starting from examining how media actors propel digital change, students will learn practical insights on building and growing Indozone amid fierce competition among digital platforms.

“Digital media business isn’t just about clicks and traffic; it’s about value, relevance, and trust given to the audience,” Riel said.

The event served as a reflective space for students and faculty to explore the challenges and opportunities in digital media business. From algorithmic issues and data‑driven business models to ethics in digital journalism, the forum also underscored FDIKOM UIN Jakarta's role in fostering critical, applied understanding that bridges communication theory and industry practice.

FDIKOM’s Journalism program focuses on ethical, critical, and digitally grounded reporting, while its Islamic Broadcasting Communication (KPI) program trains professional speakers who can disseminate Islamic values through modern media. The collaboration between these two programs exemplifies UIN Jakarta's commitment to continually bridge the academic world with the communications industry in the digital era.
