Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta held virtual studium generale on neuroscience

FPSI, UIN News Online – The Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta holds virtual stadium generale entitled “Perilaku Manusia dalam Perspektif Integrasi Al-Quran dan Neurosains” on Monday (09/14/2020) via Zoom application.

Moderated by the alumni of FPSI UIN Jakarta Raudhah Sabila, this event present Indonesian neuroscience expert Taufik Pasiak as resource person and attended by lecturers, undergraduate students and psychology master program students.

The Dean of FPSI UIN Jakarta Zahrotun Nihayah in her welcoming speech explained that the stadium generale is a scientific activity that is routinely carried out at the beginning of each semester, especially to introduce the scientific climate for new students of undergraduate and psychology master programs.

“Scientific activities at the Faculty of Psychology must receive great attention in order to create a conducive scientific atmosphere,” she said.

Meanwhile, Taufik Pasiak started his presentation with the paradigm of integration of neuroscience and the Koran that he uses during his study time in discussing human behavior.

“At the Faculty of Public Health UGM Yogyakarta, I dissected more than 100 mice with the aim of knowing the brain structure. I found that chronic stress can impair language function and symbols in mice which can then be attributed to humans. My knowledge about brain structure is strengthened by knowledge about brain function, especially language function when studying in Makassar,” he said

He also mentioned the theory of evolution as one of the approaches he uses in studying the integration of neuroscience and the science of the Koran. For example, he said that in terms of brain structure, the animals most similar to humans are chimpanzees. The similarity between humans and chimps is close to 98% and only 2% difference between the two is in the function of language and creating symbols and semantics. He also mentioned why humans were taught kalam and names as mentioned in Surat Al-Baqarah. “This is because it is related to the function of symbols and language which only exists in humans and does not exist in animals,” said Taufik.

He also added that neuroscience could be used effectively in de-radicalization programs, but it must be remembered that these treatments do not apply to everyone.

“Each person is unique, so they must be given different treatments especially for cases of radicalism and terrorism,” said Taufik. (usa/fpsi)
