Faculty of Adab and Humanities Held International Guest Lecture and Focus Group Discussion Themed "Translation and Dictionaries: Linguistic Research, Translation, and Arabic Literature"

Jakarta, UIN News Online - Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and International Guest Lecture themed “Translation and Dictionaries”. The FGD was hosted by a professor of language and literacy at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Prof. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Sabri bin Sahrir, on Monday (09/12/24).

The event was attended by; Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum., Head of Tarjamah Study Program, Prof. Dr. Darsita, M.Hum., Dr. Siti Amsariah M.Ag., and Lecturer in Translation, Dr. Mauidlotun Nisa', M.Hum., as well as students of Tarjamah Study Program and Master of Arabic Language and Literature.

The event was opened with remarks delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Dr. Ade, who stated that, “I am proud of this FGD, and I hope this event will run as expected,” he explained.

Then continued with the presentation of material by the speaker, Prof. Sabri, which contains the benefits and uses of learning Arabic to understand the context of the Qur'an, Arabic teaching methods used in Southeast Asia, world views related to Arabic, errors and types of Arabic translation, and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based technology to translate Arabic.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Sabri emphasized translation skills for students of Arabic studies in the modern era, so that they cannot be replaced by AI, “Students must expand their abilities and not rely on machine translation. Use technology as a tool, not to imitate,” Prof. Sabri emphasized.

The discussion was very interactive, as evidenced by the many questions from the FGD participants. In conclusion, Prof. Sabri motivated students to continue to learn independently and develop skills outside of lectures.

This public lecture succeeded in providing new insights and enthusiasm for FAH students in facing translation challenges in the modern era.
