Extending Education Beyond Campus through Community Outreach, School-Based Learning, and Student-Led Programmes

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta actively implements educational outreach activities beyond its campus, providing learning opportunities for local schools, rural communities, children, and members of the wider public. Through university-organised community service, faculty-based educational programmes, student-led initiatives, and collaboration with local institutions, the University brings academic knowledge and practical learning directly to communities outside formal university settings.

These activities reflect the University's commitment to the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, particularly community service, and its institutional responsibility to expand access to quality education. During 2024–2025, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta implemented educational outreach programmes involving community-based literacy engagement, science education for children, practical environmental demonstrations, and organised student community-service activities beyond campus. These initiatives contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 4 by extending learning opportunities to individuals who may otherwise have limited access to university expertise, educational resources, and practical demonstrations.

1. Delivering Community-Based Science Education through Chemistry in Village 2025

Chemistry in Village

One of the University's documented educational outreach programmes was Chemistry in Village (CIV) 2025, organised by the Chemistry Study Programme of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The programme took place on 4–9 August 2025 in Tajurhalang Village, Bogor Regency, West Java, under the theme “Chemistry in Your Area: Real Action for the Community.”

The programme was implemented by Chemistry students from the 2023 cohort, accompanied by academic supervisors and supported by members of the local community. Rather than limiting chemistry education to university laboratories, the initiative brought scientific knowledge directly to residents and children through community-oriented learning activities. Its educational components included Chemistry for Kids, Fun with Chemistry, teaching activities for children, Qur'anic learning sessions, and public seminars on household-waste management. These activities introduced scientific concepts through practical, accessible methods suited to participants' needs.

By combining academic knowledge with hands-on demonstrations and informal learning, the University made science education more engaging and relevant to everyday community life. The programme also incorporated school-facility improvements and support for local institutions, demonstrating an integrated approach to educational development and community empowerment. Chemistry in Village 2025 provides direct evidence that Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta implemented educational outreach beyond campus through student-led science activities and community learning programmes.

2. Providing Practical Environmental Education to Local Residents

Chemistry in Village (2)

An important component of Chemistry in Village 2025 was the delivery of environmental education addressing household-waste management. On 7 August 2025, the programme organised environmental seminars and demonstrations for approximately 50 participants in Tajurhalang Village. The activities focused on two practical subjects: processing banana-peel waste into organic fertiliser and converting inorganic plastic waste into ecobricks.

Participants received explanations of how banana peels could be processed through drying, cutting, and fermentation to produce useful organic fertiliser. The training also introduced ecobricks as a practical method for reusing plastic waste by compressing it into containers that can serve as building components. These demonstrations connected university-level scientific knowledge with practical environmental challenges experienced by local households. The programme encouraged participants to understand waste not merely as material to be discarded but as a resource that could be managed through environmentally responsible practices. Its practical educational content helped residents explore waste-management techniques relevant to their daily lives.

The activities also promoted greater awareness of sustainability, environmental cleanliness, and responsible consumption. Through these community demonstrations, the University implemented targeted educational outreach addressing local environmental needs outside campus, with direct participation from residents.

3. Extending Educational Outreach through Student-Led Community Service

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also conducts educational outreach through its institutional Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN), or Student Community Service Programme. KKN represents an established mechanism through which students apply university knowledge in communities beyond campus.

The programme is organised through the University's Community Service Centre under the Institute for Research and Community Service. On 28 July 2025, the University formally deployed 5,091 students to participate in various KKN schemes. The 2025 programme adopted the theme “Religious Social Innovation and Ecology,” encouraging students to engage with community needs relating to education, social development, environmental responsibility, and local empowerment. Regular KKN placements included Depok, South Tangerang, Bogor Regency, and Tangerang Regency, while additional schemes extended to other Indonesian regions and international locations.

The programme established an organised structure for student participation in community service rather than relying exclusively on occasional independent initiatives. Within the KKN framework, student groups can implement educational activities addressing local needs, including literacy support, school learning assistance, community awareness, and practical knowledge-sharing.

The University's large-scale 2025 deployment demonstrates its institutional capacity to organise student-led outreach activities across multiple communities. Through KKN, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta maintains a programmed institutional framework enabling students to deliver educational and community-development activities beyond campus.

4. Promoting Community Literacy through Academic and Local Partnerships

The University's educational outreach commitment was also reflected in its literacy-oriented community engagement during 2024. On 4 December 2024, lecturers from the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Study Programme at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences participated in a community-service initiative in Ketapang Village, Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi, East Java. The initiative was undertaken in collaboration with Rumah Literasi Indonesia, a local community literacy organisation. The programme brought together university lecturers, local literacy advocates, community representatives, and other educational stakeholders to examine opportunities for strengthening literacy and community empowerment.

Discussions highlighted the importance of accessible reading opportunities, responsible media use, community learning, and collaboration among universities and local organisations. The activity also explored opportunities for developing media-literacy training and supporting local community initiatives.

By engaging directly with community literacy organisations, University academic staff contributed their expertise to discussions on educational access and the development of community learning resources. The initiative demonstrated the University's willingness to work beyond campus boundaries and participate in collaborative responses to local educational challenges. This activity provides supporting evidence of off-campus academic engagement and literacy-oriented community collaboration, complementing the University's direct educational demonstrations and student-led programmes.

5. Implementing Both Targeted and Programmed Educational Outreach

The University's educational outreach activities operate through complementary implementation approaches.

Ad Hoc Educational Outreach

Targeted initiatives respond to specific educational needs identified in particular communities. The environmental seminars and science demonstrations delivered during Chemistry in Village 2025 illustrate how university students and lecturers can organise practical learning activities tailored to local challenges. These activities provide immediate opportunities for residents to gain knowledge, participate in demonstrations, and develop awareness of environmental solutions.

Programmed Educational Outreach

The University's annual KKN programme provides a structured mechanism for community-based activities involving students from multiple faculties. Through organised deployment, academic supervision, community partnerships, and local engagement, the University creates opportunities for educational outreach to be undertaken across different locations. Faculty community-service programmes further support the application of academic expertise beyond university classrooms. The combination of these approaches enables the University to provide both specific short-term educational interventions and organised community-service activities.

6. Improving Educational Access through Practical and Inclusive Learning

Educational outreach beyond campus is particularly important for communities that may face geographical, financial, or institutional barriers to accessing educational resources. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta addresses these barriers by bringing learning activities to locations where community members live, study, and work. Children in Tajurhalang Village benefited from age-appropriate science-learning activities.

Local residents participated in practical demonstrations of environmentally responsible waste management. Student community-service programmes created opportunities for university students to engage with communities across several regions. Literacy-oriented collaboration in Banyuwangi strengthened relationships between academic institutions and local organisations working to improve access to learning. Together, these initiatives demonstrate that the University recognises education as a shared public responsibility that extends beyond the boundaries of formal higher education.

7. Institutional Contribution to SDG 4: Quality Education

The educational outreach initiatives implemented by Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta during 2024–2025 demonstrate a commitment to extending education beyond campus. Through Chemistry in Village 2025, the University provided community-based science education, children's learning activities, and practical environmental demonstrations.

Through its organised KKN framework, the University mobilised students to engage in community-service programmes across multiple regions. Through community-literacy collaboration, academic staff contributed expertise and strengthened educational relationships with local organisations. These initiatives demonstrate that outreach activities are implemented through multiple university units and involve both student participation and academic expertise. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has therefore implemented educational outreach activities beyond campus through targeted community-learning interventions and programmed student community-service initiatives, supporting educational access in local schools and communities.

By transferring academic knowledge into practical community learning, engaging children and residents in educational activities, and maintaining organised mechanisms for outreach, the University contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
