Expanding Lifelong Learning through Public Educational Events, Free Seminars, and Professional Conferences
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta actively promotes lifelong learning by organising educational events that are accessible to individuals beyond its formally enrolled student population. Through public seminars, international webinars, academic discussions, professional development programmes, and conferences, the University provides opportunities for members of the general public to engage with academic knowledge, develop new skills, and participate in intellectual exchange. The University recognises that quality education is not limited to formal degree programmes. Learning opportunities should remain accessible to schoolteachers, researchers, professionals, community organisations, alumni, prospective students, and individuals seeking to strengthen their knowledge throughout their lives.
During 2024–2025, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta implemented public educational programmes through both free-access learning events and professionally organised conferences with registration fees, demonstrating a commitment to inclusive and continuing education. These initiatives contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 4 by expanding learning opportunities, strengthening public knowledge, and encouraging the exchange of academic and professional expertise.
1. Providing Free Public Education on Artificial Intelligence and Academic Integrity

On 28 November 2024, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta organised a public seminar entitled “AI di Kampus: Tantangan atau Peluang?” (Artificial Intelligence on Campus: Challenges or Opportunities?), alongside the launch of the Artificial Intelligence and Literacy Innovation Institute (ALII). The event was held at Harun Nasution Auditorium and was explicitly advertised as free and open to the general public.
The seminar addressed the growing influence of artificial intelligence on higher education, particularly its implications for academic integrity, teaching, learning, and responsible technology use. Participants were encouraged to consider how artificial intelligence can support educational innovation while also understanding the ethical challenges associated with its increasing use.
The programme demonstrated the University's role in making emerging technological knowledge accessible beyond formal academic courses. By opening the seminar to the public without charging participation fees, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta created an opportunity for students, educators, professionals, and interested community members to engage with important developments in digital education.
2. Encouraging Public Learning through Humanitarian and Philanthropic Education

The University's commitment to public education was also demonstrated through its seminar “Muslim Philanthropy and Humanitarian Aid: Transformation, Prospects and Challenges,” held on 9 October 2024. The event took place at the Auditorium of the Graduate School and was organised in collaboration with the University's Social Trust Fund, Institute for Research and Community Service, Graduate School, and several national humanitarian and philanthropic organisations. Partners included BAZNAS, Human Initiative, Filantropi Indonesia, and Dompet Dhuafa.
The seminar explored the development of Islamic philanthropy, contemporary humanitarian challenges, the role of charitable institutions, and opportunities for improving social assistance through research and institutional collaboration. The programme also included the launch of an academic book addressing Islamic philanthropic practices in higher education, government, and civil society.
Importantly, participation was explicitly advertised as free and open to the public. By involving academic specialists, government representatives, and humanitarian practitioners, the University transformed academic and professional knowledge into a publicly accessible learning opportunity. This activity strengthened public understanding of social responsibility, philanthropic management, and humanitarian responses to emerging global challenges.
3. Extending Educational Opportunities through Public International Webinars

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta continued expanding publicly accessible academic events during 2025 through international educational webinars. On 15 July 2025, the Faculty of Adab and Humanities organised an international webinar entitled “The Digital Gateway to Islamic History: Exploring the Past, Envisioning the Future for SDGs.” The webinar was conducted online and featured international academic speakers from Leiden University in the Netherlands and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The programme discussed how digital technologies can support historical research, including digital sources, online archives, and transnational research methodologies.
The event was explicitly open to university students, lecturers, and the general public. More than 160 participants attended from various academic backgrounds. This initiative demonstrates that Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta provides educational events that connect international scholarly expertise with wider audiences. Through online delivery and public participation, the University created learning opportunities that were not confined to its own classrooms or enrolled students.
4. Offering Free Educational Events for Professional and Digital Skills Development
The University also provides educational opportunities addressing practical professional skills and emerging technological challenges. On 20 March 2025, the Master of Information Technology programme collaborated with 13 information and communication technology study programmes across Indonesia to organise a national webinar entitled “Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, and Islam.” The event was promoted as free of charge and offered electronic certificates to participants. The webinar enabled participants to explore the relationship between artificial intelligence, mathematical knowledge, and Islamic intellectual perspectives.
On 20 August 2025, student organisations from several faculties also promoted KEDAI (Kelas Desain) 2025, an online design-training programme explicitly advertised as free and open to the general public. The programme offered practical digital-design knowledge, learning materials, and electronic certificates. These activities illustrate the University's continuing efforts to support lifelong learning through accessible non-degree educational opportunities in technology, digital creativity, and professional skills.
5. Providing Public Learning Opportunities through Career and Entrepreneurship Events

Beyond conventional academic seminars, the University organised educational events supporting professional development, career preparation, and entrepreneurship. On 18–19 June 2025, the University's Career Centre organised Career Compass Expo 2025, under the theme “Unlocking Career Doors: Your Future Starts Here.” The programme included a job fair, career-preparation activities, and Localpreneur Fest, bringing together career development and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The event was explicitly advertised as free and open to the general public. By providing access to career-related learning and professional networks, the University extended its educational contribution beyond formal academic instruction. The event supported individuals seeking employment, preparing for professional transitions, or developing entrepreneurial aspirations. This initiative demonstrates that lifelong learning at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta encompasses academic knowledge as well as practical skills relevant to employment and economic participation.
6. Hosting Fee-Based Academic Conferences for Professional Knowledge Exchange

In addition to free educational activities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also provides opportunities for public participation in professionally organised academic conferences with registration fees. One example is the 9th International Conference on Law and Justice (ICLJ), organised by the Faculty of Sharia and Law on 5 August 2025. The conference was held online in collaboration with Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, under the theme “Ethics in Action: Navigating Legal Integrity and Accountability in the Modern Justice System.”
The programme brought together academics, researchers, and legal practitioners from various countries to exchange knowledge on legal ethics, justice, accountability, human rights, and contemporary developments in law. The official conference registration information specified a registration fee of IDR 275,000 for registered conference participants. The conference also offered opportunities for scholarly participation, presentation, discussion, and professional knowledge exchange. A subsequent official University report confirmed that the conference was successfully held on 5 August 2025.
This initiative demonstrates that the University's public academic events include structured professional conferences requiring registration fees, in addition to freely accessible public seminars and webinars. The coexistence of free public educational activities and fee-based professional academic conferences demonstrates that Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta implements both free and charged educational-event models.
7. Supporting Inclusive Lifelong Learning across Academic Disciplines
The University's public educational programmes cover a wide range of disciplines and community interests. Free seminars on artificial intelligence improve digital and technological literacy. Humanitarian and philanthropic discussions strengthen public awareness of social responsibility. International webinars support academic and research development. Career and entrepreneurship programmes provide practical knowledge relevant to professional and economic opportunities.
Fee-based international conferences provide structured opportunities for advanced academic discussion and professional networking. Through this multidisciplinary approach, the University enables different audiences to engage with knowledge relevant to their educational interests and professional needs. The inclusion of both physical and online event formats also broadens participation opportunities for individuals who may be unable to attend campus-based activities.
8. Institutional Contribution to SDG 4: Quality Education
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has demonstrated an institutional commitment to hosting educational events that are accessible to the wider public.
During 2024–2025, the University organised free seminars, public academic discussions, international webinars, career-development events, and professional conferences addressing diverse educational and societal needs. These activities involved academic experts, government representatives, international researchers, professional practitioners, and community organisations.
The University's programmes were not restricted exclusively to formally enrolled students, and several events explicitly welcomed members of the general public without payment. The University also hosted a fee-based international academic conference providing opportunities for wider scholarly and professional participation. Through these documented activities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has implemented public educational events supporting lifelong learning, including free public seminars and webinars as well as charged professional conferences. By promoting access to knowledge, supporting professional development, and encouraging public participation in academic activities, the University advances Sustainable Development Goal 4 and reinforces its role as a centre of inclusive and continuing education.
