English literature department held joint webinar series

Ciputat, UIN News Online – English language and literature department, the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Jakarta, in collaboration with FAH UIN Makassar and Linguistics and Literature Association (LITA) holds joint national online seminar on ‘Gender, Migration, and Diaspora in Woman’s Literature of the Ummah’, Tuesday (07/21/2020).

Moderated by English language lecturer of UIN Makassar Nasrum, this event invites Rector of UIN Jakarta Amany Lubis as keynote speaker. Also present in the event, Head of English literature department of FAH UIN Jakarta Hasnul Insani Djohar and English literature lecturer from UIN Makassar Rosmah Tami as guest speakers.

In her remarks, Rector said that the family had an important role on building positive values in every member of the community, both for women and men, especially in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic situation. In other words, according to Rector, the Covid-19 pandemic did not become a barrier for academics to stay productive.

In addition, the Rector also highly appreciated LITA, presenters, participants and all parties who worked hard in organizing this event. “Hopefully this webinar can motivate all academics to develop their knowledge, especially in the fields of linguistics and literature,” said Rector.

In his presentation, Hasnul Insani Djohar revealed the concept and context of women's literature, especially Muslim women’s literature globally, such as in America, the United Kingdom (UK) and Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia.

According to Hasnul, Muslim women's literature has been marginalized, especially in the field of English literature. Until now, English Literature is still dominated by white men for hundreds of years.

“Therefore, I invite Muslim women in particular to promote English literature globally, one of them is through seminars,” said Hasnul.

Hasnul also hopes that activities like this can continue to be carried out in order to expand the lecturer’s network, especially in the field of Linguistics and Literature. Through this activity, they are expected to share their knowledge, either in the form of applied science or pure science in the context of the integration of the current issues in the field of English literature.
