Empowering Local Farmers through Sustainable Agriculture Knowledge and Training

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta contributes to food security and sustainable agriculture by providing local farmers, agricultural communities, and food-related producers with access to practical knowledge, skills, and environmentally responsible agricultural technologies. Through the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Agribusiness Study Program, the SDGs Center, and community-engagement partnerships, the University conducts training, workshops, seminars, and knowledge-transfer activities designed to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices and local economic resilience.

Sustainable Agriculture Training for Urban Farmers

During 2024, academics from Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta participated in a sustainable agricultural training program involving urban farmer groups in South Jakarta. The program involved 12 participants representing several farmer groups across South Jakarta, including groups from Pesanggrahan, Kebayoran Lama, Pasar Minggu, Kebayoran Baru, Setiabudi, Tebet, and Cilandak. The initiative introduced environmentally responsible techniques for cultivating ornamental plants using kokedama and wall-planting methods.

Participants received both theoretical information and practical training covering the environmental, social, and economic potential of sustainable ornamental-plant production.

The program was implemented from April to September 2024 through field observation, training, practical demonstrations, discussion, and evaluation. Evaluation showed that participant knowledge increased by 25.45 percent following the training. This initiative demonstrates the University's contribution to transferring agricultural knowledge and practical technology directly to local farming communities.

Community Training in Eco-Enzyme Technology

Another sustainable-agriculture initiative was conducted in July and August 2024 by Agribusiness students through Generasi Citra Tani (GENTA), together with the SDGs Center of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta.

Eco-enzyme training and socialisation were carried out across nine villages in Tangerang Regency and two urban villages in South Tangerang. Participants learned how organic household materials, particularly vegetable and fruit waste, can be processed into eco-enzyme. Eco-enzyme can provide practical environmental benefits, including reducing household organic waste and reducing dependence on chemical products, while also supporting applications such as environmentally friendly fertilisation. The activities helped communities understand how locally available organic materials can be transformed into useful resources.

Connecting Knowledge with Sustainable Agriculture

In April 2024, the Agribusiness Study Program also organised a National Propaktani Symposium on “Sustainable Agriculture: Utilisation of Eco-Enzyme.” The event was organised in cooperation with the Directorate General of Food Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia and Pemuda Tani Indonesia.

The symposium provided a platform for academics, agricultural stakeholders, students, and practitioners to exchange knowledge regarding sustainable agricultural practices and environmentally friendly technologies. In September 2024, the University further organised a national seminar commemorating National Farmers' Day under the theme “Utilising Local Resources to Encourage the Growth of Indonesia's Agricultural Economy.” These activities provide opportunities for agricultural stakeholders to connect, discuss practical challenges, and exchange knowledge related to local resources, sustainability, and food-production systems.

Free Access to Agricultural Knowledge

The community-based agricultural training and outreach initiatives are provided as part of the University's community-service and knowledge-transfer activities. They enable local communities and agricultural groups to access academic knowledge, practical skills, and sustainable technologies without creating additional financial barriers to participation. Through these programs, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta contributes to:

  • improving farmers' knowledge and practical agricultural skills;

  • introducing environmentally responsible cultivation techniques;

  • reducing reliance on environmentally harmful materials;

  • encouraging productive reuse of organic waste;

  • supporting sustainable local agricultural production; and

  • creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between academics, farmers, government institutions, and agricultural stakeholders.

By connecting university expertise with local farming communities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta helps strengthen sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and community resilience.
