Empowering Local Communities Through Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Education

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability by expanding educational and community outreach programmes focused on energy efficiency, clean energy, and sustainable resource management. Through academic activities, public lectures, and community-based training, the university encourages local communities to develop greater awareness of environmentally responsible practices.

One of the initiatives was a Studium Generale organised by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), in collaboration with PT Pertamina, on January 21, 2026. The public lecture discussed green energy innovation, particularly the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using Used Cooking Oil (UCO) and Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD). The programme introduced participants to alternative energy innovations and the potential of renewable resources in supporting a more sustainable energy transition.

Beyond academic activities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also extends its environmental education initiatives to local communities through capacity-building programmes for environmentally friendly Islamic boarding schools (pesantren ramah lingkungan) in Cilegon and Riau in 2025. Organised by the university's Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM), these programmes introduced environmental sustainability, renewable practices, and energy-conscious living to participating communities.

Community empowerment was further supported through the establishment and training activities at the Integrated Independent Waste Management Facility (TPSTM) KALIFA on January 22, 2026. The initiative focused on independent waste management, organic waste processing using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, and environmental education. These activities encouraged communities to adopt more responsible resource management practices and explore ways to reduce environmental impacts.

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also promotes environmental awareness through seminars and educational programmes involving students, academics, and the wider community. These initiatives address sustainable energy solutions, energy conservation, and environmentally responsible lifestyles, highlighting the importance of collective participation in achieving environmental sustainability.

Through these programmes, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta demonstrates how higher education institutions can extend their environmental responsibilities beyond campus boundaries. By connecting academic knowledge with practical community engagement, the university continues to encourage public understanding of clean energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable resource management. Moving forward, expanding educational outreach and strengthening collaboration with local communities remain important steps towards building a more environmentally conscious society.
