Embracing Santri Traditions, UIN Jakarta Holds Symposium to Celebrate Santri Day

Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN News Online - The leadership and academic community of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta enlivened the momentum of National Santri Day in 2024 by holding a Santri Day Workshop with the theme “Santri Madani: Grasping Tradition, Soaring Achievement” at Harun Nasution Auditorium on Friday (1/11/2024). Kyai from a number of pesantren and hundreds of students of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta attended the workshop.

The event was attended by the Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saefuddin Jahar, Ph.D, as well as the Head of Ma'had Al-Jami'ah Center, Dr. KH Muhammad Suryadinata, M.A., Also present were a number of leaders of Islamic boarding schools, including the Head of Darussunah Islamic Boarding School, KH Zia Ul Haramein, Head of Sabilussalam Islamic Boarding School, Prof. KH HD Hidayat, Head of Ummul Quro Islamic Boarding School, KH Syarif Rahmat RA, SQ, MA, and Head of Kampung Quran Islamic Boarding School, Dr. KH Sobari Sutarip, M.A..

In his remarks, UIN Jakarta Rector Prof. Asep Saefuddin Jahar Ph.D said that this moment is to recall the importance of upholding the values of santri in the life of the nation. Then, he emphasized the importance of santri values that must always be integrated with academic values among students. “We must respect each other, be tolerant, strengthen human values, God willing, our country will become a developed country,” he said.

In the keynote speech session, Dr. KH Muhammad Suryadinata, M.A., said that the duty of santri is not only to study, but also to maintain national harmony. “The harmony and establishment of this country cannot be separated from the contribution of santri and ulama, including in the resolution of jihad to defend Indonesia's independence. Santri must also have strong religious moderation values,” he said.

Furthermore, Prof. KH HD Hidayat, delivered material on the importance of pesantren as a gathering place for pious people who are committed to studying and worshiping. According to him, pesantren is an educational institution that is able to integrate noble values that are needed in forming moral and knowledgeable people.

Not only that, KH Syarif Rahmat RA. S.Q, MA, in his presentation conveyed the same thing, he emphasized the importance of the existence of pesantren in maintaining the integrity of Islamic teachings. According to him, pesantren education is a comprehensive and solid education. “The advancement of pesantren has three patterns of culture that are intact and unshaken, an organized structure and a trusted figure or leader,” he said.

In closing, the last speaker, Dr. KH Sobari Sutarip M.A., revealed everything about technological developments that can affect the younger generation. According to him, addiction to technology, especially cell phones, is a big challenge for parents in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. “Smart santri must be wise in utilizing technology without forgetting the santri tradition. If we are not wise, we will be eroded by the times and become slaves to technology,” he said.

The Santri Day Sarasehan event took place with full enthusiasm of the participants, which is expected to foster the spirit of santri in maintaining traditions, and contributing to the progress of the nation and state.

Monitoring UIN News Online, hundreds of students of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta also attended the event. In addition to studying at UIN Jakarta, the students who attended were students at various pesantren around the campus.
