Eco-Islam in Action: Istiqlal Mosque Friday Sermon Integrates Quranic Teachings with Climate Change Data
JAKARTA, UIN Online News – The Friday sermon at the historic Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta delivered an analytical perspective by seamlessly blending Quranic theology with empirical scientific findings regarding the global environmental crisis. Thousands of congregants followed the lecture, which connected Islamic ethics with contemporary facts on climate change and ecosystem degradation.
The visiting Friday cleric (Khatib), Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi Kharlie, explained that the Quran established the ethical and spiritual foundations for environmental preservation long before climate change became a central focus of international diplomacy.
In his address, he presented global data tracking the spike in global surface temperatures, skyrocketing plastic waste production, and aggressive deforestation rates that threaten human survival. He layered these environmental metrics with specific Quranic verses addressing cosmic balance (mizan) and human accountability as the earth's divine stewards (khalifah).
According to him, religion and science do not exist in opposition. Instead, they reinforce each other to build a collective consciousness aimed at protecting the planet and ensuring structural sustainability.
The massive congregation filling the Istiqlal sanctuary followed the presentation with deep attention. By focusing on an issue that directly impacts daily civilian life, the sermon felt immediately relevant, practical, and highly accessible to diverse social groups.
The professor reminded the audience that scientific warnings regarding climate catastrophes should act as a catalyst to awaken the moral conscience of the global community. Knowledge completely detached from ethical responsibility will only result in the continuous exploitation of natural resources.
Through the execution of this sermon, the Istiqlal Mosque demonstrates that religious pulpits can function as highly effective public education platforms, successfully bridging ancient sacred values with complex contemporary global challenges.
Amid the rapid flow of digital information, this dual approach—uniting divine revelation with data-driven science—is increasingly viewed as a vital method for cultivating holistic awareness regarding the future of human civilization and planetary health.
