Din Syamsudin: Students must uphold tolerance towards others

Main Auditorium, UIN News Online – As a student, it’s natural to be active in participating in various activities both on and off campus. However, as intellectuals, they should be better able to choose and sort out new thoughts that are accepted, so they can avoid extremist or radical ideas.

This was said by by Din Syamsudin during his speech at the Introduction to Academic and Student Culture (PBAK) UIN Jakarta, Wednesday (08/28/2019), at the Harun Nasution Auditorium, campus I of UIN Jakarta.

Din Syamsudin said that students should uphold tolerance towards others. This is because the essence of Islamic teachings is rahmatan lil alamin, which is framed in the concept of Islam wasathiyah. In addition, Washatiyah Islam always holds several principles in socializing. These principles include; I'tidal, tawazun, tasamuh, syua’ra, qudwah, muwatanah.

He explained, I'tidal is a proportional and just behavior; tawazun is to maintain a balance in life, especially between individual rights and obligations, then tasamuh, namely mutual tolerance between fellow human beings.

“Wastahiyah Islam also always puts forward shua'ra (consultation to achieve consensus in deciding something). In addition, another important thing is giving qudwah (good initiation in leading humankind into kindness) and muwathanah (admitting nation-state and respecting citizenship),” said Din.

Also present in the event, Rector of UIN Jakarta Amany Lubis, accompanied by Vice Rector for Student Affairs Masri Mansoer. (usa/lrf)
