Contributing to Poverty Reduction Policy through Government Collaboration and Evidence-Based Research

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta contributes to the development and implementation of poverty-reduction policies through collaboration with government institutions, academic research, community-engagement programs, and evidence-based policy recommendations. The University recognizes that ending poverty requires collaboration between higher education institutions, government agencies, communities, philanthropic organisations, and other stakeholders.

Through research and institutional partnerships, the University contributes academic knowledge and evidence to the design of public programs addressing poverty, education, social welfare, and community empowerment.

Regional Collaboration with the Jakarta Development Planning Agency

In November 2025, the Center for Community Service of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta held a strategic meeting with the Regional Development Planning Agency of Jakarta (Bappeda DKI Jakarta). The meeting explored collaboration between the University and the Jakarta Provincial Government in designing community-service programs aligned with regional development priorities.

One of the main areas identified for cooperation was poverty alleviation, alongside improving educational quality and strengthening research-based community empowerment. The discussions also considered priority areas such as the Thousand Islands, where education, social development, and local economic capacity remain important development concerns.

Supporting Evidence-Based Public Policy

The collaboration with Bappeda DKI Jakarta reflects the University's commitment to ensuring that community-development programs are aligned with government policy and informed by academic evidence. Representatives of Bappeda emphasized that universities possess research and innovation capabilities that can strengthen the development of more targeted and sustainable public policies.

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta therefore seeks to connect academic research with the practical needs of government and communities. This collaboration provides a pathway through which research findings can inform poverty-reduction initiatives and other regional development programs.

Contributing to National Policies for Families in Extreme Poverty

The University also contributes to discussions concerning national policies designed for disadvantaged communities. In response to the Indonesian Government's expansion of the Sekolah Rakyat program and residential education for families experiencing extreme poverty, the Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta publicly proposed a stronger partnership between universities and government.

The University proposed an integrated approach involving financial-accountability assistance, curriculum partnerships, and long-term impact evaluation. These recommendations were intended to strengthen the effectiveness, accountability, and long-term social impact of affirmative education policies aimed at breaking intergenerational cycles of poverty.

Research and Islamic Philanthropy for Poverty Reduction

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta also contributes evidence to national discussions on poverty reduction through research on Islamic philanthropy. In 2026, the University's Social Trust Fund released a national survey on zakat, infaq, sadaqah, waqf, and qurban involving thousands of respondents across Indonesia.

The research was conducted with support from national and international partners, including the Directorate for Zakat and Waqf Empowerment of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. The findings identified poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and sustainable development as priority areas for more productive use of philanthropic resources. The research also proposed strengthening institutional philanthropy, improving governance and accountability, accelerating digitalisation, and optimising philanthropic funds for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Connecting Research, Policy, and Community Action

Through collaboration with regional government, engagement with national policy discussions, and policy-oriented research, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta contributes to poverty-reduction strategies at multiple levels. The University's role extends beyond observing social problems.

It provides research evidence, policy recommendations, community-development expertise, and institutional partnerships that can help governments design and implement more effective and inclusive interventions. This approach demonstrates the University's commitment to participating in public policymaking and supporting programs designed to end poverty in all its dimensions.
