Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK): "KPK is the Unintended Child of Reform

Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN Online News - "The Corruption Eradication Commission was established beyond the deadline stipulated by the law. Therefore, the KPK is an unexpected offspring of reform," stated Nawawi Pomolango, S.H., M.H., Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission, during a public lecture and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UIN Jakarta and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of the Republic of Indonesia, held at Harun Nasution Auditorium on Tuesday (14/05/2024). He emphasized the crucial role of the public in preserving the integrity of the KPK.

For him, criticism and public scrutiny are natural for institutions like the KPK, as the KPK itself emerged from the demands of a reform that should have favored the people.

"The KPK faced much opposition from various parties, but now that it exists, it is our collective responsibility to ensure its strength in preventing and eradicating corruption," he stated.

Nawawi stressed that the KPK needs public support to carry out its duties.

"Regaining public trust is something we must continue to strive for. The KPK and its staff continue to work to fulfill the state's mandate in combating corruption," he told the audience.

In this public lecture, the alumnus of the Faculty of Law at Sam Ratulangi University also presented the KPK's strategies in combating corruption, including Education to instill anti-corruption values, Prevention by improving systems in corruption eradication, and Enforcement by prosecuting corruption cases to serve as deterrents.

Moreover, the KPK hopes that universities can implement Good University Governance (GUG), which includes managing conflicts of interest effectively, controlling gratuities and bribes, implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to strengthen integrity, optimizing technology, and facilitating information disclosure.

"I hope that UIN can produce individuals full of integrity who are committed to preventing corruption in this country," concluded Nawawi at the end of this public lecture. This public lecture also serves as an encouragement for universities to implement standard operating procedures for preventing corruption that may occur.
