Building Humanist Leaders: FAH’s 2025 SOSPROM Strengthens Ties with Madrasahs and Pesantrens
South Tangerang, UIN Online News — The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta successfully carried out its 2025 Outreach and Promotion Campaign (SOSPROM) in West Sumatra. The event not only introduced the faculty’s bachelor programmes but also served as a platform to deepen strategic partnerships with local schools, madrasahs (Islamic Schools), and pesantrens (Islamic Boarding Schools).
First, FAH announced scholarships from the Public Service Agency (BLU) for outstanding students of Madrasah Aliyah Sumatera Thawalib Parabek (Bukittinggi), Madrasah Aliyah Diniyah Putri Padang Panjang, and Pondok Pesantren Muhammadiyah Kauman (Padang Panjang).
Under the theme “Developing Humanist Potential: Shaping a Shared Future with FAH UIN Jakarta,” the three‑day event (15–17 October 2025) underscored the faculty’s commitment to cultivating intellectuals who are humanistic, principled, and excel in literature and humanities.
All three are legendary West‑Sumatra schools that have produced numerous national figures.
The first visit began at Madrasah Aliyah Sumatera Thawalib Parabek, where the school’s headmaster, Nofritri, S.Ag., M.Pd., welcomed FAH representatives alongside teachers and senior‑year students. Founded in 1910 by Sheikh Ibrahim Musa, the madrasah is famed for pioneering modern Islamic education in West Sumatra and played a key role in shaping early‑20th‑century Muslim thought.
Next, FAH toured Madrasah Diniyah Putri Padang Panjang, greeted warmly by principal Yusneli, M.Pd. The school, established by Rahmah el‑Yunusiah in 1923, stands as a symbol of women’s educational progress in Indonesia. Rahmah earned the title of Sheikhah from Al‑Azhar University (Cairo) in 1957 for her advocacy of female education.
During the visit, the team was treated to a spirited performance by the girls’ Diniyah students, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm.
The final leg of SOSPROM took place at Pondok Pesantren Kauman Muhammadiyah Padang Panjang where the FAH team was received by Dr. Derliana, M.A., the pesantren’s headmistress, along with the teaching staff and students. Founded on 5 April 1928 under the initiative of Buya Hamka, a towering figure in Indonesian Muslim, the pesantren has long attracted scholars from across Indonesia and neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand.
During each session, FAH highlighted five flagship programmes:
- Islamic History & Civilization (SPI)
- English Literature (SASING)
- Library Science (IP)
- Arabic Language & Literature (BSA)
- Translation Studies
These disciplines aim to produce graduates skilled in language, information literacy, history, and modern Islamic thought.
The SOSPROM delegation was led by Dr. Siti Amsariah, Vice‑Dean II of FAH UIN Jakarta, alongside six faculty representatives: Head of the Islamic History and Civilization Dr. Zakiya Darojat, Head of the English Language and Literature Inayatul Chusna, Event Coordinator Agus Suriadi, Head of the Library Science Siti Maryam, Head of the Arabic Language and Literature Mugy Nugraha, and Coordinator of the Translation Studies Zacky Mubarrok.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Amsariah outlined UIN Jakarta’s admission pathways such as Talent Scouting and institutional partnerships which are designed for prospective students with strong academic, linguistic, artistic, or athletic achievements.
“By collaborating with madrasahs and pesantrens, we hope to recruit the finest students for FAH UIN Jakarta,” she said.
The outreach event concluded with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between FAH UIN Jakarta and its partner madrasahs. The agreement covers recruitment of talented santri and the development of a sustainable educational network, marking the beginning of a synergistic relationship between the faculty and West‑Sumatra’s Islamic institutions.
