Breaking Barriers in Academia: The Story of Ivon Rahmani, a Non-Muslim Graduate Earning Her Doctorate at UIN Jakarta
Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN News Online – Amid the resounding applause during the 141st Graduation Ceremony of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta themed “Strengthening Innovative Graduates with Integrity and Impact on Humanity,” the presence of Dr. Ivon Rahmani, S.Th., M.Th., as a non-Muslim graduate presented a distinct story. Dressed gracefully in a doctoral gown, the graduate from the Islamic Studies Doctoral Program of the Graduate School (SPs) at UIN Jakarta successfully transcended diversity by receiving her doctoral degree at the Harun Nasution Auditorium on Saturday (05/08/2026).
Dr. Ivon's journey toward standing on this highest academic stage stemmed from courage driven by an optimistic mindset. The campus, which is intrinsically tied to Islamic values, served as a platform for her to foster interfaith understanding and nurture togetherness openly. Her decision to select UIN Jakarta as a mature educational institution for preserving diversity was rooted in the university's long historical legacy dating back to the State Academy of Religious Sciences (ADIA) era in 1957.
“I was drawn to enroll at UIN Jakarta because I saw this institution as exceptionally open to diversity dialogue across various religious denominations. UIN Jakarta has a long history dating back to 1957, which gave me full confidence that its faculty members are highly competent and qualified individuals,” Ivon expressed.
Despite stepping forward with conviction, initial anxieties lingered during her early days as a non-Muslim student within a State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) environment. However, fears surrounding inclusion and adaptation gradually dissolved amidst the warm acceptance extended by the entire academic community.
“As a non-Muslim, there were naturally initial challenges and a slight anxiety about whether I would be accepted or not. Yet over time, UIN Jakarta welcomed me with great openness and kindness. I was not only allowed to learn, but was also provided with highly adequate facilities,” she shared.
The classroom dynamics and interactions during lectures at SPs UIN Jakarta did not merely sharpen her intellectual capacity, but also provided a memorable space that broadened her perspective in perceiving differences.
Her academic journey through SPs UIN Jakarta yielded fruitful results. She successfully completed her doctoral degree by defending a dissertation examining a highly relevant topic in the digital era titled Construction of Religious Authority in Social Media: A Study on the Communication Concepts of Husein Ja'far Al Hadar and Adi Hidayat. This research stood as testament to the depth of her analysis in dissecting contemporary religious discourse in Indonesia.
“Throughout my studies at UIN Jakarta, I gained fresh perspectives that greatly enriched my understanding. The experience of engaging in direct discussions with experts and fellow classmates provided a deeper and more objective appreciation of communal values,” she added.
When asked to summarize her entire academic trajectory from adaptation to earning her doctorate, she selected three core words to encapsulate her experience at the university.
“Three words describing my experience are inclusive, transformative, and enriching. Inclusive because UIN Jakarta offers the widest opportunities for anyone; transformative because it imparts new perspectives upon graduation; and enriching because I was forged not only academically, but also through rigorous discussions with experts,” Ivon explained.
Reflecting on her accomplishments, Dr. Ivon expressed hope that UIN Jakarta will continuously preserve its stature as a welcoming and open home of learning for all citizens regardless of background.
“I certainly hope UIN Jakarta continues to extend the widest possible opportunities for non-Muslim students. Furthermore, the campus can expand collaborations with non-Muslim institutions and other faith-based universities so that our shared learning space becomes even broader,” she concluded.
For context, UIN Jakarta successfully inaugurated 3,154 graduates during the 141st Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral Graduation. The academic ceremony was conducted in two sessions, held on Sunday (05/09/2026) as well as Saturday-Sunday (12-13/09/2026) at Campus I UIN Jakarta.
