Anna Wiksmadhara Explores Career Opportunities in Translation at Prodi Tarjamah Seminar

Abdul Ghani Theater, UIN Online News - The Translation Program (Prodi Tarjamah) of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) at UIN Jakarta hosted a seminar titled "Document, Non-Fiction Text, and Film Translation: Theory and Practice." The seminar was attended by numerous students and faculty members of the Translation Program on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum., CInQR., Dean of FAH UIN Jakarta, expressed his appreciation for the seminar in his opening remarks at Abdul Ghani Theater. Dr. Ade noted that the seminar is highly beneficial for Translation students in applying translation theories.

In line with this, Head of the Translation Program, Prof. Darsita Suparno, M.Hum., stated that the seminar aligns with the vision and mission of the Translation Program to be excellent and dignified. Prof. Darsita also mentioned that the translation field is a profession where learning is achieved through practice.

"To prove competence, integrated skills with various disciplines of knowledge and technology are required," said Prof. Darsita.

Anna Wiksmadhara, Secretary of the Indonesian Translation Association (HPI), served as a speaker, emphasizing that the translation profession is deeply intertwined with linguistic sensitivity. Anna highlighted that translation is not a side job nor an insignificant task.

"There are less than 1 million translators worldwide. In Indonesia, there are fewer than 5,000, so there is still plenty of room for you in this industry," Anna remarked.

In addition to book or document translators, Anna explained that the translation profession encompasses various roles, such as audiovisual or subtitle translators, script reviewers or editors, language researchers, transcriptionists, translation managers, linguists, language proprietors, interpreters, and more.

As both a practitioner and academic, Anna noted that Translation students have a privilege since they have already studied translation theory. She also mentioned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can assist but cannot replace translators because some words require research.

Anna Wiksmadhara advised Translation students to always seize opportunities and diligently conduct language research. Following her presentation, there was a Q&A session where students engaged with the speaker. The second session of the seminar continued after a break for further discussion on the seminar topics.
