AIUA Leadership Succession: President Noorhaidi Hasan Commands Asian Campuses to Launch Transnational Degree Programs
JAKARTA, UIN Online News - Marking a critical structural milestone at the culmination of the three-day international consortium, the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Professor Noorhaidi Hasan, Ph.D., was officially inaugurated as the new President of the Asian Islamic Universities Association (AIUA) for the 2026–2028 operational tenure. Convening concurrently at the main campus of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta from June 23 to June 25, 2026, the executive succession signifies a strategic shift from institutional foundation-building to hyper-active academic globalization.
The high-profile transition ceremony took place during the legislative assembly of the 15th AIUA Annual General Meeting, operating under the master blueprint “Transforming Islamic Higher Education for Advancing Global Peace, Resilience, and Inclusive Development.” Professor Hasan takes over the leadership mantle from the outgoing President and Rector of UIN Jakarta, Professor Asep Saepudin Jahar, Ph.D.
Delivering his inaugural address immediately following his official investiture, President Hasan heavily commended the structural milestones achieved under Professor Jahar’s administration. He pledged that his two-year executive tenure would firmly weaponize the association’s platform to transition from simple diplomatic dialogue into concrete, legally-binding international programs.
"We are moving directly toward enhancing the operational platform of this international association to enforce seamless academic collaboration and absolute solidarity among all member universities," President Hasan stated.
The newly elected President unveiled an aggressive, priority-driven academic matrix designed to redefine the regional higher education landscape. The 2026–2028 executive board will mandate the immediate implementation of coordinated cross-border initiatives, featuring synchronized double-degree programs, legal joint-degree frameworks, transnational faculty and student mobility pipelines, synchronized regional seminars, and multi-author international publications in high-impact global journals.
Expressing full diplomatic backing for the newly appointed executive leadership, the outgoing President, Professor Asep Jahar, emphasized that the global competitive posture of Asian Islamic universities relies entirely on maintaining persistent institutional momentum.
"The foundational groundwork has been successfully laid, but extensive strategic obligations remain, particularly regarding deep internationalization and horizontal integration among AIUA sister campuses," Professor Jahar observed during his farewell briefing. "The upcoming operational cycles must tightly lock their fiscal and intellectual resources onto joint research projects, grassroots regional community development, and rapid student mobility. These variables are non-negotiable for scaling up our global reputation."
Jahar concluded that institutional unity and strict adherence to the newly drafted operational targets would be the definitive factors in elevating the association into a globally respected elite academic bloc.
The smooth execution of the international summit was highly praised by the Chairman of the Steering Committee and Vice Rector for International Cooperation at UIN Jakarta, Din Wahid, Ph.D. He confirmed that the high-stakes democratic election and three-day symposium successfully drew executive delegations from more than 40 premier Islamic higher education boards representing core ASEAN nations, including Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
"With the absolute democratic backing of all member states, UIN Jakarta has successfully steered this 15th Annual General Meeting," Dr. Din Wahid concluded. "The legislative consensus achieved this morning ensures that the incoming leadership has a clear mandate to accelerate concrete, cross-border academic compacts that will firmly cement the voice of Islamic higher education on the global stage."
