Ahmad Sukardja: Avoid Overeating during Iftar
Rectorate, UIN News Online – The 9th Rector of UIN Jakarta for the period of April 1998-September 1998 Ahmad Sukardja reminded not to eat and drink excessively during iftar. Overeating during iftar can lead to abdominal pain, sleepiness, heartburn, gastritis and other negative side effect.
This was said by Ahmad Sukarja in his sermon at the UIN Jakarta virtual recitation event in the month of Ramadan on Wednesday (04/13/2022). The Ramadan recitation was attended by the Rector of UIN Amany Lubis, Vice Rectors, Deans, Bureau Chiefs, Heads of units/institutions, as well as a number of lecturers and employees.
In his sermon entitled “Berkah Ramadhan bagi Manusia yang Masih Hidup”, the Professor of the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH) explained that not eating and drinking excessively not only fulfills the advice of the Prophet Muhammad, but also medical aspect.
The Prophet Muhammad advised: “No human being overfills a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any child of Adam are some morsels of food to keep their back straight. But, if they must [eat more than this], then let one third be for food, one third for drink and one third for easy breathing.” This hadith means that if the stomach is full it will have an impact on difficulty in breathing, and even become a source of other diseases.
Therefore, Sukardja suggested that at the time of breaking the fast, all food and drinks should be consumed in moderation. “It's better to eat everything in moderation,” he added.
The former Supreme Court Justice of the era of President Megawati Soekarnoputri also shared tips on living a healthy life at the age of 81. Sukardja said that since retiring as a professor of FSH, he has continued to carry out routine activities and and continues to exercise diligently.
Not only exercising, Ahmad Sukardja is also very careful about his daily food intake and patterns. For example in food, he chooses healthy and nutritious food and does not consume it excessively.
Ahmad Sukardja admitted that he was very grateful that he was still given health and a long life. Even in his old age, especially in the month of Ramadan, he decorates his life a lot by tadarus reading the Qur'an every day.
He also expressed gratitude when he was still serving as a Supreme Court Justice at the Supreme Court (MA) of the Republic of Indonesia. It is said that, according to Sukardja, he is known as a hard-working Supreme Court Justice and is free from case arrears.
All things he finished in the office and never brought home. Because of that, he is also grateful that until the end of his tenure at the Supreme Court he has not left a single case in arrears.
“Alhamdulillah, all tasks can be completed until the end of my term of office,” said Sukardja. (ns/usa)
