Profile

Dr. Shariq Siddiqui is a leading expert in philanthropy, currently serving as Director of the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI) and Assistant Professor at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Indiana University. His expertise is grounded in a strong multidisciplinary academic background, holding a PhD in Philanthropic Studies (2014) as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. Prior to leading MPI, he served with distinction as Executive Director of ARNOVA (Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action) from 2013 to 2019, where he successfully transformed the organization through international expansion into Africa and China and achieved a 50% growth in membership. He is also an active Co-Editor of the Journal on Muslim Philanthropy and Civil Society and a frequent executive education instructor for nonprofit leaders in the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Siddiqui’s research contributions focus on Muslim civil society, zakat governance, and issues of justice and inclusion in the philanthropic sector. His scholarly excellence has been recognized through numerous prestigious awards, including the Virginia Hodgkinson Book Prize (2020) for his work on the evolution of Muslim nonprofit institutions in the United States. Through recent publications in 2024, such as Understanding Muslim Philanthropy, and his in-depth research on the economic potential of zakat, he advances the vision of “Zakat Reimagined,” which emphasizes institutional transparency, accountability, and systemic impact.

Dr. Siddiqui’s work has increasingly engaged with Indonesia, where he has served as a keynote speaker at major academic and policy forums, including the International Conference on Business and Muslim Research (ICBMR 2025) at the University of Indonesia and the NAMA Summit, an innovation-focused social impact initiative. Through these engagements, he has helped strengthen bridges between global philanthropy research and community empowerment practices in Muslim-majority contexts.

In 2025, Dr. Siddiqui serves as a Professor Fellow at the Institute for Research and Community Engagement (LP2M), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. In this capacity, he collaborates academically and in research with Professor Amelia Fauzia, PhD. This collaboration is expected to enhance UIN Jakarta’s international academic networks while advancing the integration of globally benchmarked scholarship and research.
