The Establishment of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta

UIN Jakarta was established as a higher education institution integrating both general and religious sciences, producing graduates capable of responding to societal demands and adapting to the changing times.

UIN Jakarta originated from the founding of the Academy of Religious Sciences (ADIA) on June 1, 1957. ADIA was established by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to educate civil servants to become religious experts in various educational institutions across Indonesia, preparing a generation capable of understanding religion in a holistic manner.

August 24, 1960 | Merged with PTAIN

On August 24, 1960, through Government Regulation No. II of 1960, ADIA merged with PTAIN Yogyakarta to become IAIN al-Jamiah al-Hukumiyah. IAIN was located in Jakarta with two faculties: the Faculty of Education (Tarbiyah) and the Faculty of Arts (Adab).

February 25, 1963 | IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta

By the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia No. 49 of 1963, dated February 25, 1963, the Jakarta branch of IAIN became IAIN al Jamiah al Hukumiyyah Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Prof. Drs. H. Sunardjo was appointed as the Rector, solidifying IAIN Jakarta as the coordinator of faculties in the Greater Jakarta, West Java, and Sumatra regions. By 1988, IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta had several faculties, including Education (Tarbiyah), Arts (Adab), Theology (Ushuluddin), Law (Sharia), and Preaching (Dakwah) in Jakarta, as well as the Faculty of Education in Pontianak.

May 20, 2002 | UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta

The change in status from IAIN to UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta was officially completed on May 20, 2002, based on Presidential Decree No. 031 of 2002 (See Presidential Decree No. 31 of 2002 concerning the Change of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic Institute Jakarta to Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta). Consequently, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah was structurally equal to other state universities in Indonesia.

From that point onward, the integration of religious and general sciences became UIN Jakarta's primary mission, including the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2004, marking a significant milestone in realizing the integration of these fields..

Becoming a Public Service Agency (BLU)

On February 26, 2008, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta achieved a significant transformation by being designated as a Public Service Agency (BLU) through the Minister of Finance Decree No. 42/KMK.05/2008 (See KMK No. 42 of 2008 concerning the Designation of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta as a Government Institution Implementing Public Service Agency Financial Management). This transformation enabled UIN Jakarta to focus on providing maximum public services without prioritizing financial profit.

As a public service entity in the education sector, UIN Jakarta, as a BLU, prioritizes efficiency and productivity. The flexibility in financial management allows the university to implement sound business practices, improving services and achieving broader public welfare goals. This approach aligns with the principles of efficiency and productivity, forming the foundation for UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta’s contribution to the intellectual development of the nation.
