'Remain Cool Amid the Turmoil', calls the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs
Jakarta — Demonstrations are still taking place in Jakarta and several other regions. While some protests have proceeded peacefully, acts of vandalism have marred others. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin urged protesters to avoid anarchistic actions when expressing their aspirations. He also urged religious and community leaders to assist in calming the public and preventing chaos.
“I urge religious leaders and community figures to deliver messages that clarify and soothe, in order to preserve national integrity. Messages of peace are essential so that the public is not provoked,” Nasaruddin Umar said during the National Prayer and Dhikr Gathering for the Nation in Buton Tengah, Southeast Sulawesi, on Saturday (August 30, 2025).
“Expressing one’s aspirations is the right of every citizen, but I strongly appeal to all demonstrators not to act violently, as such actions ultimately harm everyone,” he added.
The minister also appealed to religious counselors, preachers, clerics, and ustadz to consistently convey messages on the importance of national unity and solidarity in every religious activity they attend. Similar appeals were also extended to leaders of religious higher education institutions.
“As guides for the people, the roles of religious leaders, community figures, intellectuals, and academics are essential in clarifying and calming the public atmosphere,” he explained.
The minister expressed his deepest condolences over the casualties resulting from the demonstrations. He prayed for Allah to grant the best place to the late Affan Kurniawan and strength and patience to his family. He also wished a swift recovery for those injured and currently under medical care. Regarding legal violations, he urged the public to trust law enforcement authorities.
“The legal process is ongoing, and I ask the public to trust the law enforcement agencies working professionally and transparently,” he said.
The minister, who also serves as the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque, called upon all religious communities to pray for Indonesia to remain safe, harmonious, and peaceful.
“We hope that everyone can draw lessons from the events of recent days and continue to make improvements in the future,” he closed.
