Rector of UIN Jakarta for the 2006–2015 Term Officially Appointed as Chairman of the Press Council for 2025–2028

Jakarta, UIN News Online – Prof. Dr. Komaruddin Hidayat, who served as Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta during the 2006–2010 and 2010–2015 periods, has been officially appointed as Chairman of the Press Council for the 2025–2028 term. The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2025, at the Press Council Building in Jakarta. On this occasion, Komaruddin succeeded Ninik Rahayu, who held the position for the 2022–2025 term.

At the ceremonial event attended by key stakeholders in national media and journalism, Prof. Komaruddin was present alongside the other eight members of the Press Council: Maha Eka Swasta, Totok Suryanto, Muhammad Jazuli, Abdul Manan, Dahlan Dahi, M. Busyro Muqoddas, Rosarita Niken Widiastuti, and Yogi Hadi Ismanto.

In his inaugural speech, Komaruddin emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity, professionalism, and independence of the media amid the challenges of the digital era. He also asserted that the Press Council must serve as both a pillar of responsible press freedom and a protector of journalists from political and commercial pressures.

“A free and responsible press is a vital pillar of democracy. The Press Council will remain committed to fostering media professionals who uphold journalistic ethics,” he said.

Prof. Komaruddin Hidayat served as Rector of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta for two terms, from 2006 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2015. He is widely recognized as a Muslim intellectual who actively writes for various media outlets and frequently participates in public discussions on Islamic, cultural, and democratic issues.

With his academic background and leadership experience, Komaruddin Hidayat is expected to lead the Press Council to become more adaptive to changing times, while strengthening the media’s role as an instrument of education and social oversight.
