Head of DKI Jakarta BAPPEDA: The Strategic Role of Students in Realizing Jakarta as a Global City

Bahtiar Effendy Auditorium, UIN News Online Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of DKI Jakarta, Atika Nur Rahmania, S.Kom., M.Si., expressed her views on technological developments and the role of students in building a global city at the Studium Generale organized by the Sociology Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UIN Jakarta, Monday (30/9/2024).

On the occasion, Atika explained the importance of the Jakarta Kini (JAKI) digital platform created by the government to improve public services and the challenges of Jakarta in the future as a global city. JAKI is an application designed to meet the various needs of DKI Jakarta residents.

In her presentation, Atika encouraged students to prepare themselves to face technological developments and understand the needs of society. She emphasized the importance of planning the future carefully, including building enthusiasm to determine career steps after graduating from college. “So, when you choose the way think about what your goals are next,” she said.

Furthermore, Atika reviewed the change in Jakarta's status after the issuance of the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) regarding the National Capital City (IKN). Although Jakarta is no longer the country's capital, Atika explained that Jakarta will remain the center of the national economy and a global business city in Indonesia. “Jakarta will function as the center of trade, services, finance, as well as the center of national, regional, and global business activities,” she explained.

Atika sees this change as both a challenge and an opportunity to accelerate the resolution of various problems in the capital city. “Jakarta has great potential as a global city because it is the center of world economic movement that can attract capital, human resources, and information globally,” she said. However, Jakarta still ranks low in the assessment of several global institutions, such as the Global City Index (GCX), Global Power City Index (GPCI), Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), and Cities in Motion Index.

To improve Jakarta's position in the global arena, Atika emphasized the importance of identifying sectors that are still lagging behind and need more attention. In this case, the role of students is very important to accelerate Jakarta's growth, by entering into various sectors and making real contributions. “Human resources are the main potential to drive this improvement,” said Atika.

In closing, Atika expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with the Sociology Study Program in the field of research related to the implementation of sociology. “If this collaboration is realized, research products from friends in the fields of sociology, politics, and other social sciences will greatly support the development of Jakarta as a global business city,” she concluded.
