Dr. Abdul Muid Nawawi Shares Journey of Integrity at UIN Jakarta’s 139th Commencement
Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN Online News—The 139th Graduation Ceremony of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta became a special moment with the presence of Dr. Abdul Muid Nawawi, M.A., as an alumni representative at the Harun Nasution Auditorium on Saturday (February 7, 2026). Having completed his undergraduate to doctoral studies at UIN Jakarta, he shared his life journey, reflecting the importance of integrity, devotion to teachers, and adaptability to the changing times.
Dr. Abdul Muid Nawawi currently serves as Head of the Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir Study Program at the Graduate School of PTIQ University Jakarta. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Tafsir and Hadith Studies in 2001, followed by a master’s degree in Islamic Thought in 2005 and a doctoral degree in Islamic Thought in 2011.
“This is my fourth time being here. In 2001, I attended as an undergraduate graduate, then in 2005 as a master’s graduate, followed by my doctoral graduation in 2011. And today, about 15 years later, I return again for a graduation ceremony. That is why I am truly an original alumnus of IAIN and UIN,” he said.
In his address, Dr. Abdul Muid emphasized a life principle he has consistently upheld: maintaining closeness with scholars and teachers. He shared his personal experience of assisting Prof. Dr. KH. Nasaruddin Umar, M.A., which began when his mentor was still a young lecturer living in the Ciputat lecturers’ housing complex.
This devotion, or khidmah, was carried out sincerely for many years and included simple tasks such as carrying belongings and reminding his teacher of daily schedules.
“My duties were carrying his bag, keeping his shoes or sandals from getting mixed up, and reminding him of mealtimes. I continued to accompany him as a form of tabarruk (seeking blessings),” he explained.
His service extended beyond academic matters into personal family life. He recalled being entrusted to accompany Prof. Nasaruddin’s children before bedtime by reading them stories every night. He shared this experience to illustrate that devotion to one’s teacher must be carried out sincerely, regardless of how small the task may seem.
For Dr. Abdul Muid, all of his current achievements—including the trust placed in him as a regular preacher at the Presidential Palace—are tangible results of his teacher’s prayers and blessings. He believes that the professional opportunities he has received are manifestations of the blessings earned through years of patient service.
“For a long time, I waited for the chance to become a preacher at Istiqlal Mosque but did not get it. Instead, I was given a regular preaching schedule at the Presidential Palace every year. That is surely due to the blessings of Prof. Nasaruddin Umar,” he emphasized.
Regarding competitiveness in the professional world, Dr. Abdul Muid stated that UIN Jakarta graduates possess a distinct advantage in spiritual integrity. According to him, UIN alumni are equipped with strong religious values that not only benefit their institutions but also shape their professional character.
“UIN alumni have strong discipline because their religion teaches it. They work with the awareness that Allah SWT constantly watches over them, so integrity is maintained without the need for strict supervision from superiors,” he explained.
Facing future challenges, Dr. Abdul Muid reminded graduates not to remain trapped in conventional ways of thinking. He encouraged alumni to be technologically literate and capable of translating their ideas into engaging audio-visual formats. In his view, self-representation through physical documents is gradually being replaced by more creative and dynamic digital content.
“The times often move much faster than we can run. Therefore, we must continue to develop ourselves and keep moving forward so that we can truly become beneficial to others,” he concluded.
