Addressing Post-Flood Trauma: Faculty of Psychology at UIN Jakarta Conducts Psychological First Aid Program for Flood Victims in Bekasi
Bekasi, UIN Online News — The floods that struck Bekasi, West Java, left not only material damage but also deep psychological wounds among survivors. In response, the Faculty of Psychology at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta launched a Psychological First Aid (PFA) program on Monday (March 17, 2025) to support the mental recovery of affected communities.
This humanitarian initiative was organized by the Faculty’s Research and Community Service Institute (LKPM), led by psychology lecturers Dr. Ikhwan Lutfi, M.Psi., and Drs. Akhmad Baidun, M.Si., alongside dozens of psychology student volunteers.
Dr. Ikhwan explained that the PFA program aims to help flood survivors manage initial trauma, anxiety, and post-disaster emotional distress. "We want to be present not just as an educational institution, but as a community partner in times of crisis," he said.
The program employed warm, empathetic approaches—including brief counseling sessions, play therapy for children, and stress management education for affected families—to foster psychological healing.
"Early psychological intervention is crucial to prevent more severe mental health issues. Through this program, we hope survivors can recover with renewed resilience," emphasized Drs. Baidun.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative, noting the critical need for psychosocial support after disasters. Many participants, especially children and the elderly, reported feeling calmer and more supported after the PFA sessions.
Separately, Faculty Dean Dr. Yunita Faela, M.Si., Psi., highlighted the program as a reflection of UIN Jakarta’s collaborative spirit and humanitarian values. "We are committed to making a tangible difference—not just in classrooms, but in lives that need hope," she stated.
