UIN Jakarta Strengthens Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Jakarta, UIN News Online – In a progressive move to enhance environmental preservation, the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) has issued a directive urging educational institutions to adopt proactive measures in protecting and maintaining the environment. This directive, outlined in the Director General of Islamic Education’s Circular Letter (SE) No. 1 of 2025, was officially issued on January 14, 2025.

According to the statement on the Ministry's official website, Director General of Islamic Education, Prof. Dr. H. Abu Rokhmad, M.Ag., emphasized the critical role of environmental conservation in fostering a conducive learning environment. "This policy seeks to enhance the cleanliness, organization, and overall aesthetic of educational institutions, thereby creating a productive learning atmosphere for students to achieve their best potential," he explained on Wednesday (1/22/2025).

As a leading educational institution with a strong commitment to sustainability, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta has fully embraced the decree and aligned its policies to support the initiative. UIN Jakarta has been actively implementing various programs that reflect its dedication to environmental conservation.

UIN Jakarta Rector, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., highlighted the university’s holistic approach to sustainability. "As an institution of higher education, we are not only tasked with producing academically and professionally competent graduates but also those who are environmentally conscious. Through our efforts to preserve the environment, we are actively shaping a better future," he stated.

Some of the key initiatives at UIN Jakarta include the launch of the Electric Bus (Bilis), which reduces carbon emissions on campus, the installation of refillable water stations to minimize single-use plastics, and the strategic placement of waste bins for effective waste segregation into organic, inorganic, and recyclable categories. These measures aim to create an eco-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, and organized campus environment.

Moreover, environmental values have been integrated into the university’s curriculum to instill a deeper understanding of sustainability among students. The university's green campus policy also emphasizes responsible resource management and supports innovative projects that align with environmental goals.

Through its proactive stance and innovative practices, UIN Jakarta aspires to serve as a model institution in the implementation of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' environmental preservation policy. By fostering a clean and sustainable educational environment, UIN Jakarta is contributing not only to academic excellence but also to the broader global effort for future generations.
