Croatia’s Grand Mufti: Indonesia Offers a Global Model for Understanding Islam

Diorama Room, UIN News Online — Croatia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Dr. Aziz E. Hasanovic, delivered an inspiring public lecture at UIN Jakarta, Tuesday (19/11/2024). Speaking on "The Role of Islam in Building Peace in Europe," he highlighted the critical role of Islamic education in fostering harmony and called for the global community to learn from Indonesia’s inclusive Islamic practices.

Sheikh Hasanovic expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality during his visit. “I am deeply honored to be here and witness the dedication of UIN Jakarta’s academic community. It is a privilege to engage with students and educators who uphold the values of knowledge and faith,” he said.

The Grand Mufti began by emphasizing the Quranic imperative to seek knowledge, referencing Surah Al-Alaq as a cornerstone of Islamic education. He explained that acquiring knowledge transforms individuals from mere seekers (tholabul ilmi) to true bearers of knowledge (ashabul ilmi).

“Pursuing education is not just an academic endeavor; it is an act of worship, a pathway to fulfilling Islamic principles and seeking Allah’s pleasure,” Sheikh Hasanovic affirmed.

He further encouraged the audience to emulate the moral excellence of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). “The Prophet’s life exemplifies the Quran in action. As Muslims, our faith is measured by our character, and good character is the hallmark of true faith,” he noted.

Discussing the status of Islam in Europe, Sheikh Hasanovic highlighted significant challenges faced by Muslim communities, particularly in countries where Islam is not officially recognized. “This lack of recognition denies Muslims access to essential rights, such as building places of worship and educational institutions,” he explained.

He emphasized the importance of advocating for the recognition of Islam as an official religion to ensure equal opportunities for Muslim communities. “Islamic education is the key to breaking misconceptions and demonstrating that Islam is a religion of peace and humanity,” he said.

The Grand Mufti proposed three solutions to combat Islamophobia: providing quality education, promoting cultural and religious literacy (tsaqafah Islamiyah), and fostering moral excellence. “Faith and morality are intertwined. The strongest believers are those who excel in their character,” he stressed.

Sheikh Hasanovic lauded Indonesia’s achievements in promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. “Indonesia’s success in fostering harmony among diverse faiths is a lesson for the world. Europe, especially Croatia, can learn much from Indonesia’s approach to inclusive Islamic practices,” he concluded. (Aji Pangestu/Fauziah M./Photos: M. Fahri Afrizal, Hermanudin)
